Among the unforgettable characters lurk the homicidal wife and her deadly leg of lamb, a conniving and lecherous wine connoisseur and the one-eyed brain at the mercy of his vengeful spouse. Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected is a collection of 16 short stories written by British author Roald Dahl and first published in 1979.

Tales Of The Unexpected Series 3 Episode 1 The Flypaper 1980Probably the most chilling, terrifying, disturbing of all the Tales!

Roald dahl the tales of unexpected #2

Each episode told a story, often with sinister and wryly comedic undertones, with an unexpected twist ending. This collection showcases sixteen of Roald Dahl’s finest tales, taken from Kiss Kiss and Someone Like You. There are tales of the risk-takers, such as the man who wagers his daughter’s hand in marriage to a wine connoisseur, or the traveller who throws himself overboard on a cruise liner to win a bet.

All of the stories were earlier published in various magazines, and then in the collections Someone Like You and Kiss Kiss. It does feels rather sinful to award Roald Dahl three stars, three days after his Birthday, but I must say that Tales of the Unexpected was a bit of a slog. I had high hopes for this collection of short stories because I adored Dahl as a child and I imagined that Tales of the Unexpected would be a welcomed step up in style and themes, like taking the stabilisers off a beloved bicycle.
